Test Security & Virtual Neuropsychology Assessments
Why Test Security Still Matters in Modern Practice
Test security is not negotiable. Neuropsychological instruments are protected professional tools because they inform life-changing medical, educational, and legal decisions. The integrity of our field depends on maintaining secure administration and interpretation. We fully support these principles and uphold them through secure digital design—not despite it.
Modernization and Digital Test Integrity
Digital platforms such as Creyos (Cambridge Brain Sciences) and other validated adaptive systems are not replacements for trained neuropsychologists—they are extensions of our clinical expertise. These tools use randomized stimuli and encrypted sessions to maintain test security while improving precision and efficiency. Each session is overseen by a licensed clinician who ensures validity, environment control, and ethical testing procedures.
Virtual Neuropsychology Remote Proctoring Protocol (Ensuring Test Integrity)
Maintaining remote test integrity is our highest priority. To ensure the security and validity of your virtual neuropsychological assessment, we employ a rigorous, multi-step remote proctoring protocol for the testing phase. This process guarantees that the environment is controlled and that the results accurately reflect the client's performance, not outside assistance:
- Client Identification & Affirmation: The client must present a valid ID and formally agree to the Telehealth and Test Security Agreement confirming they are alone and will not use outside resources.
- 360° Room Scan: Prior to testing, the client is required to use their phone or webcam to slowly perform a 360-degree environmental scan of the testing space. This confirms that the room is private, free of unauthorized materials (like notes or textbooks), and that no other people are present or assisting.
- Live Webcam Monitoring: The entire assessment session is conducted via live, secure, two-way video, allowing the neuropsychologist to continuously monitor the client's head, hands, and full screen activity.
- Digital Screen Monitoring (When Necessary): For certain specialized digital measures, secure remote proctoring software may be used to temporarily monitor the client's computer screen during the administration of specific tests. This is purely to ensure that no prohibited software or external resources are used. Access is terminated immediately upon test completion.
Addressing Concerns about Virtual Testing Validity
Some providers remain skeptical about telehealth-based or adaptive testing, citing fears of compromised validity or security. These concerns are understandable but rooted in outdated assumptions from early remote testing attempts before modern validation studies and encrypted adaptive tools existed. The field has evolved—and so must our approach to access and delivery. Our virtual assessment protocol is specifically designed to meet or exceed traditional in-person security standards.
Virtual Neuropsychology is Regulated, Secure, and Data-Driven
Every client engaging in remote testing signs a Telehealth and Test Security Agreement affirming that sessions will not be recorded, screenshotted, or shared. All testing occurs within HIPAA-compliant platforms that monitor for unauthorized access. In short: virtual neuropsychology meets or exceeds the security standards of traditional in-office administration when properly implemented.
Innovation Serves Access and Public Safety
The greatest risk to public safety is not modernization—it’s lack of access. Long waitlists, regional scarcity, and clinician shortages leave many individuals undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Secure virtual neuropsychology bridges that gap responsibly, ensuring that qualified patients receive accurate, timely evaluations that improve outcomes and protect the public.
Protecting the Profession While Moving Forward
We honor the legacy of traditional neuropsychology while advocating for progress grounded in science. Protecting tests does not mean resisting innovation—it means applying technology ethically to enhance reliability, reach, and reproducibility. Ethics and innovation are not opposites; they’re partners in modern practice.
