Alzheimer’s Disease

What is it?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that primarily affects memory, learning, language, and reasoning. It develops gradually and often begins with subtle cognitive changes that may be mistaken for normal aging. Early and accurate identification is critical, as treatment options, safety planning, and legal decision-making depend heavily on diagnostic precision.

Symptoms

Early symptoms commonly include short-term memory loss, repetitive questioning, difficulty managing finances or medications, word-finding problems, disorientation in familiar environments, and subtle changes in judgment or personality. As the condition progresses, individuals may experience impaired reasoning, reduced insight, and increasing dependence. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) may represent a transitional stage.

Cause

Alzheimer’s disease involves progressive neurodegeneration characterized by amyloid plaque accumulation, tau neurofibrillary tangles, synaptic dysfunction, and neuronal loss, particularly in memory and association networks. These changes disrupt communication between brain regions critical for learning and reasoning.

Treatment

While Alzheimer’s disease is not curable, early diagnosis allows access to disease-modifying therapies when appropriate, optimization of cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, cognitive rehabilitation strategies, caregiver education, and proactive life planning to preserve quality of life.

Why is neuropsychology needed

Neuropsychological evaluation provides objective measurement of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, supports differential diagnosis from other dementias or medical conditions, establishes a cognitive baseline, and supplies formal documentation for medical decision-making, estate planning, and capacity determinations.
